Founded in Oxford, Mississippi, and now based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the company publishes fiction and non-fiction. Additionally, Jefferson Press sponsors an annual prize, The Jefferson Press Prize, to identify promising new fiction.

The company’s first book in print, Will Campbell's Forty Acres and a Goat, continues as a paperback classic, while new works like MoonPie and Beer and Food: An American History have added to important books in print.
